Sonoco

Sonoco Alcore’s Karhula core board mill in Kotka automated PET/OCC bale dewiring with Cross Wrap to improve safety and reduce manual work at the start of its 65-meter core board line (≈80,000 t/year).

Challenge

Replace manual wire cutting with a safer, fully automatic process that handles variable bale sizes and harsh winter conditions, stabilizes infeed to the pulpers, and lowers pulper wear and clean-down needs.

Solution

A Cross Wrap Dewiring machine with a long infeed conveyor grabs, cuts, and coils bale wires, separating metal from the material stream and enabling sale of clean coils for recycling. Integrated pacing with the pulpers and safety features – fencing, remote control, laser/sonar sensing, and safety-key operation – allow one operator to feed the line calmly and safely.

Key takeaway

Automated dewiring improved site safety, cut manual labor, reduced pulper maintenance, and created recycling value from coiled wire. With steady 24/7 operation, the mill reports smoother flow and fewer pulper cleanouts.

“Today we get money back from the wire recycling and the pulper maintenance work load and costs have decreased significantly.”

 – Janne Ruoti, Factory Operations Manager, Sonoco Alcore Karhula board mill.
