Holcim cement kiln in Spain opening alternative fuels with Cross Wrap Bale Opener

Holcim’s Villaluenga cement plant in Spain (with waste-management handled by Geocycle) invested in a fully automatic Cross Wrap Bale Opener to automate alternative-fuel infeed. The line was purchased in 2018 and installed in April 2019 to support steady, high-quality SRF/RDF/fluff feeding to the kiln.

Challenge

The plant needed to eliminate wrapping film and bale wires from the fuel stream, stabilize feed to the kiln, and handle both round and square bales without slowing operations. A calmer, safer loader pace and automation that could match infeed-line speed were also priorities.

Solution

Cross Wrap delivered the Bale Opener, which automatically opens bales, removes film and ties, and moves material forward for processing. The opener’s cycle speed synchronizes with the infeed line, and optional longer feeding conveyors provide buffering to keep loading unhurried and safe. Capacity is about 25 bales/hour. In Cross Wrap’s standard design, removed film and wires are collected into compact bundles that are easy to handle and recycle.

Key takeaway

By automating bale opening, Holcim achieved a cleaner, steadier alternative fuel feed, improved safety, and greater sourcing flexibility thanks to compatibility with variable bale shapes – all of which strengthen kiln reliability and overall process control.

One of the biggest benefits of the Bale Opener is its operation, which opens both the square and round bales. For this it is the perfect choice for Holcim.
